One of the latest additions to the world of orange wine is the Baccabianca from Tenuta Grillo. Made by a husband and wife team, they use only organically-grown Cortese grapes (normally used the produce Gavi di Gavi) from lowyielding vines. The juice is then left to macerate with the skins for 45 days to create an unusual wine that combines an intense fruity flavour with spice and a touch of tannins.

Cortese

Commonly known as the rather neutral grape variety behind the wines of Gavi di Gavi, but at the hand of Guido e Igiea Zampaglione from Tenuta Grillo it is transformed into a rich, complex and very long orange wine.

The Region

Piedmont, Italy

The estate is situated in Piemonte on a dry, chalky-sandy plateau 350 metres above sea level at the heart of Monferrato, the classic region for Cortese & Dolcetto growing.

The Producer

Guido Zampaglione

Guido Zampaglione comes from Campania, Southern Italy. He makes a Fiano down there but seven years ago he bought this property because he really wanted to produce wines that could age.Here his major commitment is in the vineyard which means paying daily attention to every change as far as the vineyard and the climate are concerned. At the winery the cortese goes through long skin maceration (30/40 days) which results in great ageing potential and lots of elegant complexity too.
