    (04/10/2017) Barbaris is the common name for those dried berries.
    Yes they are more sour than the cranberries, used in the persian kitchen they are called "zereksh", they were not only used in new persian kitchen, in the origins of Iran , Afghanistan and Tadshikistan, but also in the countries of the ancient , big persian empire, which include Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and maybe even Arminians as well as Azerbeidshanis would use it to top their "Polo" , "Plov" or in the balkan manner said "Pilav", one of the most ancient dishes registered by time.
    The equivalent in Afghanistan and Pakistan is "Palavi". These two countries also belonged to the ancient persian "Reich" at its biggest historical success.
    But back to the botanical meaning. There are 16 different species of Barberries spread out through the Eurasian Continent. These plants have something in common. All their parts are toxic. The root is toxic. The leaves, branches everything. Even the berries. The Barbaris Thunbergijs, was discovered by a swedish botanist. You can t eat the berries. They are toxic like the rest of the plant. The only enjoable plant for human beings is The"Barbaris Vulgaris". On this plant, the berries are the only part which doesn t include poison. All the other species, as i recherched are toxic and only suitable for the joyful experience, to invite some lovely birds in your garden. Maybe there are some other eatable species, but if u want to go for the Barberry, out of which you can push your nutrition experince into a new direction, then look for the "BARBARIS VULGARIS".

    By the way in the Russian Areas, Childrens Lemonades made from those Berries have a long but quite "chemically infused " tradition.

    These berries are really wonderful and they are growing everywhere. It s not such a big magic, but you have to exactly know which hedges are the right ones.
    After you dry them well and wash them well ( 15 min soaked in water, rinsing them rgularily, as I learned from a woman from Tehran)

    It has a lot of Vitamin, it should not have a seed inside!!

    (26/09/2014) I've never tasted them before and cooked with them tonight in a rice dish. Lovely, almost sour tasting. Definitely would recommend them. They give a real Middle Eastern flavour to a dish.

    (21/12/2013) I am a huge Ottolenghi fan. It was his Saffron rice with barberries recipe that turned my father in law into a fan too! Barberries are like dried cranberries but a bit sharper and add the perfect zing to any dish.
